Artist’s Statement
My interest in organic objects such as vegetables, fruits, seed pods, and most
intently, flowers comes from my interest in gardening and aesthetics found in
the natural world. Fixating on single blooms and concentrating on their interior
and detail in my compositions enables me to translate nature into a metaphorical
self-portrait. A flower, like a person, has the ability to recreate itself. The
different phases of the bloom yields physical and psychological parallels to the
stages in my life. I read the shape, color, and movement of a flower in terms of
conveying or creating a mood. In this respect, the flowers in my work are
narratives. A mixture of objects taken from a specific space in time can provoke
questions, tell a story, or create mystery as can the various parts of a flower.
Amplification of floral details gives the viewer an opportunity to see what I
see and to think about more than the obvious. Floral characteristics are much
like ourselves: colorful, fluid, deep and dark, transparent, complex, guarded,
open, glorious, withered, growing, and delicate, fragile forms of life.
What I love most about being an artist is the joy of serendipitous discovery. I
learned to begin each body of work as an adventure and let it take me wherever
it wants to go. Thought and planning go into each piece, but I admit that,
often, things just happen. Now I look forward to the “surprises” and enjoy the
ride.
